Winter
The
winter is cold and life in the mountains is
tough for the sheep. They get hungry, because
there is very little grass
and heather left to feed them. During these
months, John Kissane walks up the mountains
every day to bring his sheep extra feed.
With
over fifteen feeding places around the farm,
John needs more than 20 bags of feed (at 25
kg each)
to keep his sheep happy. That's
more than 500 kg of feed John hauls every day.
Bags cost about €8 each. John
spends
more than 150 on
feed every day! You can imagine the total
feeding bill at the end of the season.

Hard
work & Heavy bags
The sheep are already waiting at the gate for John to arrive. As soon
as they see or hear him, they come running to the troughs. Carrying
the 25kg bags, John has to cross streams and climb mountains and rocks
to reach the feeding places. The dogs love to "help" him.
Sometimes they get so excited, they start rounding up the sheep instead
of leaving them eat peacefully.
